Beyond Biological Reductionism with Raymond Tallis

I listened to a very interesting interview on Madness Radio recently entitled ‘Beyond Biological Reductionism’ (Click Here).  The interview was with Raymond Tallis, a neurologist, philosopher, poet, Academy of Medical Sciences Fellow, and author – among others- of Why the Mind is Not a Computer and Aping Mankind: Neuromania, Darwinitis and the Misrepresentation of Humanity.

Tallis discusses questions such as Can people’s behavior really be explained by neuroscience and our evolutionary needs as hunter-gatherers — or is this just a popular fad?

Does understanding the brain really solve the mysteries of being human? What is the role of the search for meaning that humans embark on? What is the role of ‘conscious agency’ and ‘free will’ that have been associated with being human- even when the constraints of social structures or unconscious forces are recognised?

The interview with Tallis exposes the bad science and faulty logic behind pop obsessions with the brain and evolutionary psychology.
